Padme's Meadow Picnic Gown:  Star Wars Episode II, Attack of the Clones

I began this gown on a whim in November of 2007 for no better reason
than I simply didn't enjoy wearing either of my two Senator Amidala
gowns.  It seemed like a good idea to have at least one Star Wars costume
that didn't have big hair!

My unexpected winter project!  I'm going to attempt to finish this one in less than four months.  I've gotten a pretty
good start.  I purchased silk cloque (chevron)  from Thai Silks and dyed it last week.  The embroidery is coming
along nicely on the center corset panel.  My functional corset out of linen (hand dyed) was completed in a single
evening.  I purchased my skirt/blouse sequins from a friend and my Chinese crinkle chiffon for my skirt and blouse
has already shipped from Silk Connection.   The cape fabric presented more than a bit of difficulty.  Since I couldn't
find any appropriate netting I ended up buying nylon organza from JoAnns (white) and dyeing it myself.  The roses
will probably require some additional embroidery.

I've finally finished my embroidered center panel for the corset!  Actually, it was 98% finished about two weeks ago,
however I was just feeling too lazy to put the final stitches in.  Also, I received a surprise package from
Padawansguide, the impossible to obtain, screen-accurate shawl fabric!  I haven't dyed it yet (feeling a bit nervous).
I've received my Chinese crinkle chiffon from The Silk Connection, though it's waiting to be dyed.  I also received
Midori ribbon samples from Benae Quee.  They are really quite perfect.  I'll be ordering after Christmas.

I've finally finished the embroidery on the two side panels of the corset.  I spent about a month finishing what was
approximately 3 hours worth of work.  Thankfully, my corset panels are already cut and lined and ready to assemble.

I also dyed my skirt fabric.  The first round of dyeing ended in disaster.  Though my swatches turned out fine, the
finished product was extremely dark.  I ended up stripping the color (which came out lemon yellow) and re-dyeing
with Tan, Tangerine, Yellow and Golden Yellow dyes.

At this point it probably seems as if I'm not doing anything at all on this project!  I am still working, albeit quite
slowly.  The corset is mostly complete, waiting only for a hem binding, shoulder straps and closures.  It doesn't
remotely fit my dress form so the photo is quite awful.  The white chiffon is assembled and requires spot dyeing and
a hem.  The outer gold skirt is assembled and I've started the sequin glueing/ vining process.  I have a feeling I'll be
doing this for a very long time.

I ended up taking a very long hiatus b on this project due to general frustration with embroidering the chiffon skirt
panels.  It took me several months to sort out the issue, and I just began working on the gown again in June.
I first finished gluing the sequins to the 8 skirt panels.  This took several days.  Even so, I will probably glue more
sequins on after finishing the vining embroidery.
The chiffon underskirt and extra chiffon for the blouse were spot dyed in yellows and pinks.  This was very easy to
do in the sink, using boiled dyes.  Constructing my  blouse took several days as each of the panels and sleeves had to
be vined and sequined.  My sleeves are gathered, rather than using elastic at the bicep and forearm.  I just don't like
using elastic, it rarely works well for me.  I ordered a 25M roll of 1/2" woven silk ribbon from Dharma Trading.  I
had some lovely samples from M&J Trimming, however, they were beyond my budged.  I custom dyed all five colors
of the ribbon using RIT dyes on the stovetop.  Most of the ribbon colors required mixing two to three dye colors.  I
will post the recipes later when I do the complete write-up.  I also ordered my headband ribbon from The
Ribbonerie.  They were very helpful and quick!

I finished the costume the last week in July.  There was a tremendous amount of work to do with regards to hooks
and eyes, buttons and tacking.  The shawl proved a real problem.  I couldn't get the net to dye dark enough, but the
flowers took dye like mad.  I couldn't obtain any proper air-brush colors at such short notice, so I ended up mixing
fabric paint in one of the pump bottles and spraying the backside of the shawl.  I may add more embroidered flowers
at a later date.  I constructed my dragonfly pin out of sculpey.  I will freely admit I have no sculpting skills, so it is
somewhat horrible, but it is a temporary solution.  I intend to go back and hand embroider the flowers on the skirt
and I will probably add more vining and sequins.  Always a work in progress!
