Star Wars Episode II:  Obi Wan Kenobi, Jedi Robes

Since I've finally reached a point where I have time to costume for others, I've decided to
make Jedi robes for my husband.  The classic look of the EpII Obi Wan robes has always
appealed to me, so I was finally able to begin construction on this project in December 2006.
I am also intending to do full accessories with the costume, including replica lightsaber, which
will probably be a huge challenge to this seamstress!  The costume is currently in-progress,
awaiting completion of proper Jedi accessories!

As always, the best place to begin any Star Wars prequel costume is Padawan's Guide and my copy of
Dressing A Galaxy.  For some time I've been extremely intimidated by the Jedi ensemble since it was so
radically different from any other project I've done previously and also because of my general lack of
experience in tailoring for men.  A Christmas giftcard to JoAnns made this wish list project a reality and so I
obtained a good amount of a rayon/flax blend fabric and a natural cotton for the tunics and lining.  I'll
probably utilize any leftover fabric for the Anakin Padawan project.  The fabric wasn't an exact match,
Indian khadi was not to be had at JoAnns, so I picked a nicely textured natural colored fabric that would be
easily dyeable.
I cut the tunic fabric in half and bleached one half for the undertunic and dyed the other half with a custom
mixed "cream" for the overtunic.  The photo on the left shows the lining (left) next to the tunic fabric (top:
outer tunic, bottom:  inner tunic).

I've been making steady progress on the project, however my website software has been giving me
problems, hence a lack of updates.
I've completed the inner and outer tunics as well as the tabards and obi.  I created extremely simple
patterns for the tunics and tabards, based on the
pattern drawings found on the Padawans Guide Jedi
pages.   As for the obi, I decided to try the very interesting wrapped, tie front obi pattern posted at
Amber's Jedi Meditation Chamber website.  I was very happy with the results.
I picked up some cream colored muslin at JoAnns yesterday with the intention of beginning the pants.  The
robe may have to wait for the time being as I'm set on getting good quality wool, which I can't afford at
the moment since I sunk all my extra cash into my
Padme Packing gown.  I saw an extremely lovely bolt of
wool at my favorite
Gayfeather Fabrics and the swatch was a close enough match (since the original fabric
was vintage WWII wool).  Alas, I believe that it was $20+ per yard and didn't look as though there was
enough left on the bolt for the robe.  Additionally, the boots have been extremely problematic, again being
WWII era and very difficult to find.
The photos were taken on a female dress form, distorting the hem of the tunic and the drape of the
tabards.

I'm currently a bit stalled on this project, due to a lack of fabric and continuing work on my Padme Packing
gown.  However, I did find
this wool (left) and thought it would work nicely for the price.  I'm still having a
lot of trouble finding appropriate boots for the costume.  Naturally, I want the
$450 replicas, (right) but thats hardly in the budget!

Not much progress to report on!  I cut out the muslin for the pants, however I haven't fitted them yet so I haven't cut
from the actual material yet.  I did check out our local hardware store for possible lightsaber parts while shopping for
metal for Padme Senate gown necklace re-do.  I saw quite a few good options, though I didn't want to wander too long
since I didn't want to explain to any employee that I was looking for lightsaber parts!  In any case, here's another item
on my accessory wish list:  an Obi-Wan fx lightsaber.  This one is a bit more attainable than the boots.

Still no progress!  I had a few problems with the pants pattern I drafted so I set the costume aside
for a bit to work on other projects.   I also haven't ordered much in the way of supplies as I spent
a small fortune on my
Padme Packing gown.  I did however, order the metal rivets for the belt.
Since I've been doing a fair amount of accessories work lately, I thought I would at least get my
leatherworking completed.  I purchased my rivets from
SD Trading Company, which was linked
from
Padawan's Guide.

I still haven't done any additional work on the costume.  I've been gathering supplies and information on the accessories
though.
I ordered the boots yesterday from
Caboots, who had a wonderful variety of Star Wars costume boots.  It seemed that
most sources were out of the small size Jedi boots, so I was happy to get a pair as the riding boots and replica boots
were far beyond my budget!

Yay progress!  I completed the belt alteration this weekend though I still need to add food
capsules and pouches.  I'm still debating whether I'll make spats for the boots or not.  It would
make the costume more accurate, but I guess it depends on the amount of time I have left.

I should probably point out that I finished this costume several weeks ago, but due to illness and a busy schedule I am sadly behind in posting
anywhere besides my livejournal.  After much fabric perusal and checkbook balancing I finally decided that I couldn't possibly obtain anything I
would consider decent for robe fabric at a price that was affordable.  In the end, I decided that I would be happier spending more and getting good
quality, so I ordered the auburn wool flannel (see January 19th entry) from Renaissance fabrics.  When it arrived, I wasn't disappointed!  I ended up
getting the robe 95% together in one night and leaving the hemming for the following evening.  I cannot even begin to describe how beautiful this
wool is, it's absolutely worth every penny!  All I needed to do was obtain a different pair of pants in a lighter color (yes, I purchased pants, I hate
sewing them!).  I haven't finished with the food capsules and pouches due to serious sewing/costuming overload!  Here are some photos of the
in-progress robe and completed ensemble.
Please forgive the poor lighting, it was late!  The last
two photos on the right are the closest to the correct
color.  The first three are quite hazy and poor!

For most purposes, I had generally considered this project complete.  However, always on the
lookout for more accurate fabrics, I spotted some fantastic cotton crinkle crepe at my favorite
fabric store, Gayfeather Fabrics in downtown Madison.
I didn't purchase it immediately, but thought it through for several days before returning to
purchase 5 yards of cream colored "Brussels crepe."  It's really, really beautiful in person and
nearly perfect as far as a screen accurate match.  It just requires dyeing for the proper outer tunic
color.  So, time to make another Jedi tunic!

I finally photographed the whole ensemble outside!  It definitely makes a difference. Now I just need to tackle the
pouches, food capsules and new tunics.
November 3, 2007

Since I received my plastic pieces from
Plastruct I decided to finally get my food
capsules finished.  I used
Kai's tutorial with a few alterations.  I used a foam brush
and Liquid Leaf instead of spray paint.  It really has been a labor-intensive project,
requiring lots of drying time between coats of primer, Liquid Leaf and clear coat.
Here are a couple in-progress photos.
